What is VegPro?

VegPro Software is an umbrella term for a suite of integrated software solutions designed to enhance the data collection and analytical capabilities of vegetation ecologists and wildlife managers.

By combining desktop and mobile computing technologies, VegPro streamlines field workflows, reduces manual processing, and enables the rapid generation of reliable outputs for ecological interpretation, monitoring, and decision-making.

Methodological Approach

To support accurate and repeatable vegetation analysis, the software is built around the two most widely applied field sampling approaches.
Understanding the distinction between these methods is essential, as each informs how data is collected, interpreted, and compared in later steps.

Point-Based (Plotless) Methods

Point-based methods emphasize efficiency and objectivity, making them ideal for rapid surveys across large or variable landscapes. Sampling occurs at discrete points along transects, grids, or randomly distributed locations.

Common parameters recorded include:
  • Plant species intercepted at each point
  • Contact type (basal area vs. canopy projection)
  • Nearest plant species to the point
  • Herbaceous phytomass or biomass estimates

These methods are highly adaptable and widely used for both herbaceous and woody vegetation. A classic example is the Point-Centered Quarter (PCQ) method.

Why use this?
Minimal setup, low equipment needs, and strong objectivity — especially effective for large-scale monitoring.

Area-Based (Plot-Based) Methods

Area-based methods rely on clearly defined plots (quadrats) that provide a fixed sampling unit. These plots allow for detailed, multi-parameter measurements within a known area.

Typical plot sizes

From small (≈1 m²) herbaceous plots to larger (10–100 m²) plots for woody vegetation, depending on study goals.

Commonly recorded parameters include:
  • Species presence or absence
  • Individual counts or density
  • Percent cover
  • Frequency of occurrence
  • Height, biomass, structure, or functional traits
Why use this?
Ideal for comprehensive community descriptions, diversity metrics, and detailed vegetation monitoring.

Data Structure and Management

VegPro organizes survey data in a structured, flexible way that mirrors field workflows, making data collection, storage, and analysis streamlined and transparent.

Project and Sample Sites

Each VegPro project contains multiple sample sites, which represent individual field locations. Metadata fields can be toggled on or off depending on survey needs.

Typical metadata:
  • Name or ID
  • Date of recording
  • Fieldworker names
  • GPS location

This flexibility ensures that projects can be adapted to different protocols without forcing unnecessary data entry.

Recordings and Storage

Sample sites may contain multiple recordings, depending on the field methodology:

  • Points for plotless (point-based) surveys
  • Species observations for area-based (plot) surveys

All data are stored in a SQLite database on the mobile device, which can be directly downloaded for analysis in R or imported into VegPro Analyst (Desktop).

Alternatively, users can export data in CSV format for use in spreadsheets or other statistical software.

Available Products

The VegPro software apps are available on mobile (Only Android at this stage) for data capture and desktop (coming soon on Windows) for data analysis that will become available soon.
